Alexandra Evans: 2,700 Mile Hike for Breast CancerPosted by: JYu on Jun 5, 2009 |
|
I received an e-mail from Alexandra Evans and she had kind words to say about our website. I
Below is Alexandra's essay about her upcoming 2700 mile hike for Breast Cancer:
"In 2010 I will hike the Pacific Crest Trail to raise money for Breast Cancer Research."
"The hike will take between 5 ½ and 6 months and almost 2,700 miles of wilderness. It is from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) boasts the greatest elevation changes of any of America's National Scenic Trails, allowing it to pass through six out of seven of North America's eco-zones including high and low desert and old-growth forest country. The PCT is a trail of diversity and extremes."
"I got the idea a couple of years after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s a survivor and doing well. This idea was enforced during my visit in Germany when I found out that my cousin, whom I had not seen in 26 years, had bone cancer. I went to see her and she told me that she had breast cancer 5 years earlier. But because of her extremely bad experience with chemo therapy she refused to go through chemo again. My cousin, Katharina, died on September 24, 2008. This was 3 months after I had visited her. RIP"
"The monetary donations will be for high-end hiking equipment, transportation, lodging and food. Actual hiking items are welcome as well. Please use “Pledge to the Cause and Support the Hike” link on my blog."
"There will be drop boxes along the hike approximately 6 hiking days apart. This will be the time to clean up, reload the backpack and refuel my body with energy. At this point I will also upload a weekly journal and pictures to my blog at http://www.HikeForBreastCancer.com."
"Even though the hike itself won’t start until May of 2010, I started to train already. However, in order to train properly I will need the hiking equipment ASAP."
"The training program I conduct exists mainly of trail running, day hikes and soon over night hikes."
With Gratitude,
