Day 2: Diet and Fitness Training for The Riverrock Events

Day 2 of my 10-day “intense diet and training discipline” before the Riverrock Events and Carytown 10K (May 15- May 17, 2009).

I jinxed myself and got sick, and no - it is not the H1N1 Swine Flu (thank God), but apparently, there is an allergy/cold bug going around that lasts about 48/72 hours also known as a minor head cold.  I am feeling a bit better today and try to resume the workout routine after work this afternoon.  I thought it was a mild case of breathing in too much Lysol sanitizer at the fitness center on Monday. I was stuck in bed wheezing and sleeping away the sickness unable to hit the treadmill and weights.  Aside, it was Cinco de Mayo and I did manage to take part in some celebration and shenanigans.  I am still young and “partying” and sickness is not a stranger to my friends and me.  Besides the sickness, weather in Richmond, VA has also affected training.  It is as if the cities of Seattle and London gave birth to a monsoon and stuck pins in a voodoo doll to create a week of rain in the city.  The weather calls for scattered thunderstorms the rest of the week; I am crossing my fingers that it stays far away.

Here is an interesting article from CNN about working out if you are suffering from a head cold: http://topics.cnn.com/topics/common_cold

As for my diet trek, I am like most people when they are sick; they let go of themselves when they eat.  Sure, I drank more than 16 glasses of water and kept my fluids high.  My meals started decent from breakfast until lunch, once I woke up around eight for dinner it was downhill from there:

Breakfast – One Banana, Men’s One-A-Day Health Multi-Vitamin, Vitamin D + Calcium Pills, and Zyrtec (I’m suffering from allergies).
Lunch – Ukrop’s Macaroni Salad
Dinner – Baked Macaroni and Cheese with Ikea Baked Meatballs, Green Beans, Potato, and three Dinner Rolls

I will be honest I over indulged during dinner, but I had a light day.  My philosophy is you can eat whatever you want because the next day you are going to burn it out at the gym or at work.  That is exactly what I will have to do and this weekend I will have to suffer doing two a days to make up for the slack this week.  I hope that I will be 100% functional tomorrow and really get some miles in.  Getting the most out of your performance and doing well on your next race event is certainly all about the build-up and being able to control / discipline yourself.  Nine more days +

Special shout-out to Julianne Chai – Thank you for speaking with me this week and I can’t wait to get you to post a blog on the ThinkFastMoveFaster.com site.  Follow her on twitter: http://twitter.com/bicoastalite and website at: http://www.bicoastalite.com/
